5 th June: National Family Health Survey The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today (24 November) released the findings of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2019-21, the fifth such survey since it started. NFHS provides information on population, health and nutrition for India and its states and union territories. The survey shows that the total fertility rate (children per woman) has fallen to 2 from 2.2 in 2015-16, which is below the replacement rate of fertility of 2.1 (estimated by the UN population division). The replacement rate is the level of fertility at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next. Below this, the population is expected to start declining. The total fertility rate (TFR) for urban areas stands at 1.6 and for rural areas at 2.1.
